Master Data Management

Over the weekend of March 12, Astina helped Mérat migrate its customer accounts (debtors) in SAP to the new SAP MDG.

What was done that weekend?

Master data management (MDM) refers to creating a single, trusted master reference (a unified data foundation) for all critical business data, such as product, customer, asset and financial data. MDM helps ensure that companies don't use multiple, potentially inconsistent versions of data across different parts of the business, for example in processes, workflows, analytics and reporting. The three key pillars of effective MDM are data consolidation, data governance and data quality management.

Migrating the customer accounts (and thus the customer data) to the new SAP MDG meant that Mérat's web shop had to be taken offline for a while as the data was converted in SAP. Following an advance notice on the web shop, Astina put up the maintenance page on Saturday evening and deactivated the web shop. From then on, users could no longer log in to the web shop or place orders. This made it possible to migrate the data both on the SAP side and on the side of Mérat's web shop.

The challenge was that all customer numbers had to be remapped so that they would still be available in SAP after the migration. In addition, existing orders, users and other data had to be transferred to the new customer accounts. The data migration went smoothly, and the subsequent tests revealed no issues. That wrapped up the work for Saturday, and all that remained was to wait for the new data from SAP so that the new customer accounts would be fully available in the web shop. This data had been promised for Sunday morning, after the migration to SAP was complete.

On Sunday morning, SAP delivered the data as planned and processing started automatically. As in our tests, there were no problems with the import, and after a few manual checks we were able to reactivate the web shop and the other integrations ahead of schedule.

So on Sunday evening we could raise a glass to a successful weekend and celebrate this success in style!
